PENANG-born and Malaysia’s current 10th Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially visited his home state for the first time after assuming the country’s top post following the 15th General Election.

It would not have been a more appropriate time than today at the Penang Chief Minister’s Chinese New Year Open House at Setia SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas.

Tens of thousands of people, particularly Penangites, thronged the event space to add merriment to the festive occasion.

They enjoyed the variety of food and local delights served by the many stalls that were set up.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, as the host for the day, took the stage and addressed the guests.

During his speech, he said this year’s open house, unlike any other in the past, is a very special one as the country is seeing a downward trend and an improved Covid-19 situation, allowing people and businesses to thrive again.

“Today, we not only celebrate Chinese New Year, but we warmly welcome the improved Covid-19 situation in the country, and of course, celebrate the homecoming of our 10th Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“As we usher in the Year of the Rabbit, an animal that is popularly known for its wisdom and dexterity, let us get inspired by these traits and use them as a guide to continue with our vision and mission to boost Penang’s image worldwide.

“I would like to invite all parties, be it from the public or private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as community-based organisations, to continue to practise a harmonious living with one another for the betterment of our country’s growth.

“Also, a special thanks to Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his consort Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor; and the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, for gracing this event,” Chow said in his speech.

Meanwhile, Anwar, during his speech, said rejecting corruption would be the way forward for Malaysia to achieve greater heights and be a developed country in many aspects.

“I will never, in any given circumstances, tolerate corruption. High-ranking civil servants and enforcement bodies should no longer be allowed to use their power to secure government contracts to acquire the country’s wealth.

“I am certain we can achieve greater results for our country, such as improving our economy if we say no to corruption.

“We have other more important issues to address, such as resolving urban poverty, caring and being more compassionate towards the needy.

“Penang has been doing an excellent job, be it from contributing to the country’s economic growth to providing a helping hand to the needy through various channels.

Also present during the open house were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, State Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman and Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy.
