Sparking creativity in challenging times

DEALING with the new normal and the increasing uncertainties around us, the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), has this time around joined hands with UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College to organise a poster design competition.

The theme for the competition, ‘Rediscovering New Reality with the Pandemic’, is aimed to inspire innovation in the new normal and to express oneself in the composition of this new reality.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said while the competition aims to focus on the importance of innovation, it is also to encourage the younger generation to face these challenging times by using their talents to create a future better than this era of new normal amid this Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is heart-warming to see an institution like UOW take heed of the current situation and collaborate with PYDC to organise a programme that’s crucial, especially to benefit our younger generation.

“As once quoted by the great Albert Einstein, ‘in the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity’, is a fitting quote that best describes our current scenario.

“Regardless of the pandemic, we need to keep moving forward, because it is during these trying times, our best efforts and creative and innovative minds need to function effectively for the greater good of everyone,” said Soon during a press conference in Komtar today.

The competition is open to individuals aged 15 to 30 years old and it is from Nov 5 to 30. Participation will be in groups, comprising two members in each group.

One of the two members must be a Penang-born or who works and studies in Penang. Each group is required to submit two posters by using only computer softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and other relevant mediums.

The first prize winner will walk away with RM1,200 while second and third place (x2) winners will bag RM600 and RM300 each.

Upon completion, participants are required to submit their works through their own Facebook pages with hashtag #pydc_uowmkdu and post viewing must be set to ‘public’.

PYDC general manager Dr Gwee Sai Ling said the posters would be evaluated based on criteria such as originality, impact of content, composition and creativity.

“Through this competition, we hope that the youth will fit in well with the new reality and strive harder to create a fresh future full of creations out of pure innovation and creative works.

“This would not have been possible without UOW showing great interest to collaborate, and it is right to commend their efforts and interest to embark on this journey with us (PYDC),” Gwee told a press conference.

Also present during the press conference were Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang, Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI) deputy general manager S. Bharathi and UOW vice-chancellor Prof Dr Chong Beng Keok.
