EDUCATION remains a key pillar of Penang’s development agenda as the state continues to strengthen access to learning opportunities for students from all backgrounds, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said initiatives under the Penang2030 Vision have placed strong emphasis on education as a driver of social mobility and unity, noting that more than 75 per cent of the vision’s targets have already been achieved through collaboration between the government, industry, educational institutions and the community.

Chow was speaking at the Penang SEED Charity Walk 2026 themed “Education as the Core of Unity”, held at SEGI College Penang in Jalan Green Hall. The programme also saw RM43,000 raised through contributions from partners and sponsors in support of education-focused community programmes under Penang SEED.

The chief minister said the funds would further strengthen community-based educational support, particularly initiatives providing free academic tutoring for children from low-income families.

“Education in Penang is not limited to academic achievement alone, but serves as a catalyst for inclusive growth and nation-building in a multicultural society,” he said.

“The state government has implemented various education-related initiatives, including free tuition programmes benefiting more than 1,500 B40 students annually, laptop assistance for students in need, and improved digital learning facilities in schools.”

He also pointed to ongoing collaboration with private educational institutions and more than 50 higher education and skills training centres across the state as part of efforts to develop a strong talent pipeline.

STEM education programmes, including those conducted through Tech Dome Penang, continue to play a key role in preparing students for future industries, while the state is also expanding focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and smart campus initiatives to meet the demands of the digital economy and Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Among those present at the event were Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze, Penang National Unity and Integration Department director Rohai Zahar Nedi, Penang SEED president Inna Lee and secretary Chew Chee Tatt, and MPKK Pykett Avenue/Northam Road Johnny Chew Chong Chew.

Chow said education efforts require strong cooperation from all stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector, NGOs and the wider community, adding that programmes such as the charity walk demonstrate how collective effort can help build a more progressive and united society.

He expressed appreciation to all sponsors, volunteers and participants for their contributions in making the programme a success.

After presenting certificates of appreciation to the sponsors, Chow witnessed a colourful and lively boria presentation by a group of SK Permatang Damar Laut pupils. He later also visited the different booths set up along Jalan Green Hall, participating in some of the activities as well.
